The early automobiles were compared to horse carriages. People described these automobiles as horseless carriages. During the 1920s, there was rapid development in terms of automobile technology and design. The automobile became sleeker and faster as time passed.

Current Status

There were over 63 million automobiles which were produced worldwide. There are several issues that still propel the evolution of automobiles such as safety issues and technological issues.

Many modern innovations have been developed to be able to make the automobile as safe as possible. Air bags, seat belts, and other safety devices have been developed and are still undergoing continuous development to be able to provide security and safety for the passengers.

The use of clean technologies is also being pushed by many groups of people, not only environmentalists, because the transportation industry has been a major contributor of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.

The automobile has changed the world in a very comprehensive way, touching on almost every facet of modern life. Automobiles are at their best as of now but they are still being developed to be able to bring their worth to a whole new level.

The automotive industry has grown since the end of the 2nd world war. Cars are more comfortable, spacious and elegant. The engines are bigger and stronger making these work horses work well in the fast lane.

The advantage of open markets creates stiffer competition among the automotive players. It keeps the research and design divisions working constantly to build better and more fuel efficient cars.

In the 90’s the first hybrid car was introduced into the market. Other manufacturers have followed suit developing similar models. The fluctuating price of oil in the world market has helped in the sale of these new vehicles as well as compact cars. People who once owned SUV’s have also replaced these vehicles with those that have smaller engines.

The United States automotive industry is strongest in the world. But things have changed. Due to deals and agreements with foreign countries, new cars are competing with the local brands. Since these are cheaper and in some cases better, sales have suffered.

Recently, Ford announced that 30,000 jobs will be cut from the workforce. This is part of the restructuring campaign due to slow sales. Other companies such as Volkswagen have also stated similar reductions.

Another advantage of the automotive industry is that it has generated new jobs. The United States just like Japan and Germany have moved manufacturing operations overseas. This is because the cost of labor is cheaper and there is a market for those vehicles in those countries.

The disadvantage of having it done overseas is that a lot of Americans will not have jobs. This in turn will increase the unemployment rate of the country and people who have been working in the assembly line for years will have a hard time looking for a new job.

The automotive industry has also made old rivals into friends. Chrysler has merged with Daimler-Benz. Ford made a similar arrangement with Volvo. The combining of technologies and know how of such partnerships has led to the development of better vehicles. This as some analyst say is just the beginning of more global consolidations in the future.

The oil problem has also prompted manufacturers to try finding alternative fuels to power these vehicles. Japan has developed the electric car. Some countries in Europe are trying to use sugar cane oil to replace diesel.

The disadvantage of this partnership will forever change how these cars were developed. Volvo had a way of making a car. Ford had a certain approach. Each of these companies had an x-factor that distinguishes one brand from another.

The advantages of the automotive industry outweigh its disadvantages. Though this might make the world one giant corporation, as long as there is a demand from the consumer, manufacturers will still continue to build better, safer and more efficient machines.

It is common knowledge that the heavier a car is, the more fuel it takes to make it move. It is left to an engineer to devise better ways in constructing a car to make it lighter, but at the same time, safe.

Engine efficiency is also a concern that automotive engineers look at. They assess, for example, the movements an engine and its transmission systems to assess whether power is efficiently distributed and used by the vehicle.

Environment concerns
It is not fair to think that everyone working with cars is pitted against the environment. In fact, there is a specialized field in automotive engineering that is concerned with minimizing vehicle emissions into the environment. These specialists work together with engine experts and designers to find the best means of reducing the level of pollutants that get introduced into the environment as an engine is used.

Further Innovations
Automotive engineers are also at the forefront of shaping the design and manufacture of future automobiles. These forecasts, however, panned out less than what was predicted. From a projection of over $40 billion dollars, the figure has been whittled down to half as more conservative measures were considered.

Nevertheless, that is not to say that the development of this technology will be abandoned. Far from it, in fact. Spending for electronic systems for every single car made went up from $110 back in the early 1970s to lmost $2000 today – the average for most cars.

Controller Area Network (CAN)
Believe it when you’re told that you car is not run by just one computer but by a network of them. You’re probably familiar with LAN or Local Area Network, where one computer is linked to others. For your car, there is the CAN that basically links the many systems in your car and allows them communicate with each other. Such interconnected systems would involve everything from critical systems like engine management, anti-lock brakes and cruise control to less-demanding applications like seat and window controls.

Car Safety Devices
Devices designed to protect a car’s passengers are generally divided into two categories: active and passive safety devices.

Active safety devices refer to systems that constantly work to ensure a car’s passengers’ safety. Examples of these are traction control (TCS), dynamic steering response (DSR), and acceleration slip regulation (ASR). These systems may not be noticed by the average driver, but they work by sensing road and driving conditions and then adjust the car’s performance accordingly to make the ride safer.

Passive safety devices are the more visible features for car safety, but even these are controlled by electronics. For instance, airbag deployment has seen a tremendous amount of improvements over the years. Before, deployment was too late or too early. Either way, it was hazardous to the driver and its passengers. Now, with more advanced systems, devices in your car are programmed to recognize conditions that lead to a high collision impact. Systems like the airbag and seating adjustments are deployed to minimize impact and injury to the people inside the vehicle.

Fuel efficiency
With today’s sky-high fuel prices, car manufacturers realize now more than ever that the market is ripe for fuel-efficient vehicles. Electronics play a major role in executing tasks that ensure efficient burning of fuel such as with the electronic fuel injection system (EFI). Taking it a step further, electronic devices allow the switching between gas and electric engines in hybrid cars.

The car of today certainly is a far cry from its predecessors. It has become more than just a means to get from point A to B; it’s making the “getting there” as safe and as comfortable as possible.
